Tectonic setting of the world's giant oil and gas fields and its revelation for hydrocarbon exploration

  • Since 1990's, the domestic hydrocarbon consumption grows so rapidly that it outpaces oil pro-duction. The paper introduces study conclusions on giant oil and gas fields in the world written by American scholar Mann P. et al. up to date: Tectonic Setting of the World's Giant Oil and Gas Fields. Using suc-cessful world experience and domestic exploration practice for reference, this paper indicates Chinese petroleum geologists should use new-thoughts to enter into new domains and areas for giant oil and gas fields. As for this, the authors summarize that the following domestic domains and areas possess huge po-tential for giant oil and gas discoveries: (1) deep-water areas of the north shelf of the South China Sea; (2) marine oil-gas play of big superposed basins; (3) new formation of the big highly exploration-matured basin in the eastern China; (4) stratigraphic type oil-gas reservoirs.
