Application of Integrated Geological Data to Description of Structures in Papua Fold Belt

  • Papua Fold Belt is an important belt with great oil and gas discovery in Papua retroarc foreland basin. However it is hard to identify effectively the structures with the conventional geophysical method due to the rugged mountain configuration, limestone karsts, high dip bedding and faults. To solve the problems in structural description, many geologic data have been used, including the study results about regional stress field, configuration of the ground, surface geology, strontium isotopic data and drilling data. This method can decrease the uncertainty in structure interpretation, and good results have been obtained in structural model building and trap description. It is proved by practice that this method is very significant for study of the structural styles, shapes and trap scale during the early exploration and appraisal stage of oil and gas reservoirs in foreland basin.
