Abstract: The development of water depth and drilling equipment in oil industry from 1940 to present is described. According to the field cases, the problems coming from the special geologic environment, low temperature, shallow water flow, and so on are addressed. Confronting with various challenges resulting from deep water, the drilling techniques and equipments are discussed and a prospect for the future of deep water drilling at home and abroad is presented.
